Requirements to Purchase This Insurance
You can buy this insurance if you, and anyone you want to insure:
◊
Are at least 30 days of age and under
age 45
◊
You are temporarily living in Canada,
but Canada is not your home country
◊ Are a full-time student with proof of admission, or
A student completing post-doctoral research in a recognized learning institution, or
The named spouse and/or child of and living with the student
◊ Are covered under a government health insurance plan (GHIP) for the entire duration of time you are living in another Canadian province or outside Canada.
If you stay in your destination between semesters, you can re-apply for coverage as long as you have proof of enrolment in the following semester.
WHAT COVERAGE WILL YOU HAVE?
Eligibility
You are not eligible for this insurance if any of the following apply to you:
Have been advised by a physician not to travel;
Have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with less than 2 years to live;
Have a kidney condition that requires dialysis
Used home oxygen during the 12 months before you applied for this insurance.
Period of Coverage
Coverage can begin up to 30 days before the school year starts and end up to 60 days after the school year ends.
Your coverage starts on the later of:
The effective date shown on your confirmation; or
Your arrival date in Canada.
A waiting period will apply if you purchase this coverage after your arrival at your destination.
Your coverage ends on the earliest of:
The date you return home, unless you return home under the Trip break benefit; or
60 days after your full-time enrollment at a recognized learning institution ends; or
16 days after you leave Canada to visit another country or when 50% or more of your period of coverage is spent visiting another country except your home country; or
Note: The Assistance Centre may approve reinstatement of coverage when you return to Canada and if you can provide a statement of good health.
The date you become insured under a government health insurance plan (GHIP); or
The date you are no longer considered a spouse or child as defined in this policy; or
365 days after the effective date of your policy; or
The expiry date shown on your confirmation.
Family Coverage is available to you, your spouse and dependent child(ren) who are travelling with you, who are listed on your application, and who are under age 45 and meet all eligibility requirements when you purchased the family coverage option and paid the family rates.
Waiting Period
During the waiting period, premiums are paid, but sickness manifested itself during this period is not covered
Waiting period is the 48-hour period following your effective date of insurance if you purchased this policy after the expiry date of your existing Manulife policy or after you arrive at destination. Any claim due to sickness arising during a waiting period is not covered. No waiting period for injuries.
Trip Break - You may temporarily return home for up to 21 consecutive days while you are enrolled in school to attend a special event without terminating your coverage. There will be no coverage and refund of premium for any number of days that you have return home. Your coverage begins again when you arrive back in Canada. Note: You must receive pre-approval from the Assistance Centre to use this benefit.
Coverage outside Canada
This policy provides emergency medical benefits outside of
Canada for up to 15 consecutive days when:
Your travel outside of Canada is less than 50% of your period of coverage.
Your travel begins and ends in Canada.
Your travel excludes your home country.
Automatic Extensions
Your coverage will be automatically
extended beyond the expiry / return date
shown on your confirmation:
If your common carrier is delayed, for up to 72 hours.
If you have an emergency that prevents travel but does not require hospitalization, for up to 5 days.
If you are hospitalized on your return date, during hospitalization and for up to 5 days after hospital discharge.
To Stay Longer than Planned
You may be able to extend your coverage as long as:
1. your period of coverage does not
extend beyond 365 days;
2. you remain eligible for insurance
under this plan, and there must not be any change in your health status;
3. the extension request is made prior to
the expiry date of your existing policy
issued by Manulife Financial; and
4. there has been no change between
single or family coverage.
NOTE: For policy extensions, no losses or expenses or benefits will be paid for any illness or injury which first appeared, whether diagnosed or not, or for which treatment may or may not have been received prior to the effective date of the extension of coverage under this policy.
Cancellations and Refunds
You may cancel your policy at any time before your policy effective date.
You may also request a premium refund for your unused days when:
You begin coverage under a GHIP; and
You provide proof of the effective date of your GHIP, and
You have not started a claim or been provided with any assistance services.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS This insurance provides up to a maximum aggregate of $2 million per policy for emergency medical and non-medical coverage for covered risks. Emergency Medical Benefits Emergency means a sudden and unforeseen occurrence of an illness or injury that begins during the period of coverage and requires immediate medical attention. ● Hospital expenses up to the maximum aggregate for - 60 days hospitalization for injury or illness - 30 days hospitalization for psychiatric care - Out-patient and emergency department services ● Physician services plus up to 5 follow-up visits ● Diagnostic services ● Private duty nurse up to $10,000 ● Ambulance transportation up to $5,000 ● Prescription drugs up to 30 days supply ● Paramedical services - up to $70 per visit to a combined maximum of $700 for services provided by a licensed chiropractor, osteopath, physiotherapist, chiropodist, or podiatrist for a covered medical condition. ● Emergency dental treatment - accidental injury up to $2,500 - relief of pain up to $100 - per extracted wisdom tooth up to $250 ● Psychiatric care $5,000 for the services of a licensed psychiatrist while you are an in-patient, plus up to 5 followup visits for continued psychiatric care as an out-patient after you are discharged. ● Trauma counseling up to 6 sessions ● Medical appliances ● Emergency evacuation up to $100,000 ● Family transportation to bedside up to $4,500 ● Repatriation of mortal remains - up to $25,000 ● Tuition reimbursement up to $5,000 per semester ● Trip break up to 21 consecutive days without termination of coverage * Please note: For Canadians travelling abroad, if the claim is a result of an act of terrorism, this benefit may be limited
Non-Emergency Medical Benefits (Wellness Benefits) ● Annual medical examination up to $100 (if 365 days are purchased) ● Annual eye examination (if 365 days are purchased)
Accidental death or dismemberment Insurance up to $10,000

Exclusions and Limitations
Student medical insurance does not cover everything. This insurance has exclusions, conditions and limitations. Please read them and understand the policy before you buy this insurance.
Pre-Existing Medical Condition exclusion may apply to a medical condition and/or symptoms that existed prior to your trip. This policy will not pay any expenses or benefits relating to:
a) A pre-existing condition that was not STABLE in the three {3} months
before the effective date of your coverage. This exclusion applies to you, your spouse, and your children.
b) Any medical condition related to a birth defect if the insured child is under age 2.
STABLE means a medical condition when all of the following statements are true:
there has not been any new treatment prescribed or recommended, or change(s) to existing treatment (including a stoppage in treatment, and
there has not been any change in medication, or any recommendation or starting of a new prescription drug, and
the medical condition has not become worse, and
there has not been any new, more frequent or more severe symptoms, and
there has been no hospitalization or referral to a specialist, and
there have not been any tests, investigation or treatment recommended, but not yet complete, nor any outstanding test results, and
there is no planned or pending treatment.
Some Other Exclusions
This policy will not pay any expenses or benefits relating directly or indirectly to:
Elective, non-emergency, or experimental medical treatment, including maintenance treatment for a chronic medical condition such as medication refills, usual tests or exams, and treatment not required for the immediate relief of pain and suffering.
A medical condition when you knew, or for which it was reasonable to expect, before you left your home, or before the effective date of coverage, that you would need or be required to seek treatment for that medical condition.
Any emergency medical and non-emergency medical services for any injury that occurred or illness that started in your home country during a Trip Break.
Pregnancy, pregnancy termination/abortion, childbirth, or complications that arise from any of these conditions or procedures.
Any act of terrorism or any medical condition you suffer or contract when an official travel advisory issued by the Canadian government states, "Avoid all non-essential travel" or "Avoid all travel" regarding the country, region or city of your destination, before you left Canada. This exclusion does not apply to claims for an emergency or a medical condition unrelated to the travel advisory.

What to do if you got sick or injured In the event of sickness or injury which may result in claim, contact the Assistance Centre immediately. 1 877 331-3134 toll-free from the USA and Canada +1 (519) 251-7401 collect to Canada from anywhere else in the world. You can also contact the Assistance Centre with the TravelAid mobile app. Download the app through the Google Play store or the Apple App Store. For more information, visit active-care.ca. When contacting the Assistance Centre, please provide your name, your policy number, your location and the nature of your emergency.
Please note that if you do not call the Assistance Centre in an emergency and prior to any treatment, you may pay 25% of the eligible medical expenses the company would normally pay under this policy. If it is medically impossible for you to call during the emergency, the 25% co-insurance does not apply. In this case, contact the Assistance Centre as soon as possible or have someone call on your behalf.

For a Single Applicant : The premium rate of $3.73 is applicable to each day of coverage.
For Family Coverage The rate is two times the Single applicants rate..
NOTE: All applicants must be under the age of 45.
Coverage must not exceed 365 days.
